Fun fact: anytime you hear a story that boils down to “and then some ABSOLUTE FOOL sued this totally innocent megacorporation for assloads of money AND WON! Can you believe it? Ridiculous. Some people, right?” 99 times out of 100, the corporation super fucked up, the plaintiff 100% deserved that money,.and you’ve just been fed corporate propaganda.
“Hot Coffee Lady” had to get skin grafts and was at least the 11th customer to be hospitalized. The coffee served to her was in violation of a court order requiring McDonald’s to sell their coffee at a safe temperature.
The “warning: contents hot” label is a passive-aggressive move by McDonalds because they implemented it at the same time that they finally complied with legal requirements to serve safe beverages.
Every time you see “warning contents hot” and roll your eyes because of course it’s hot, you’re assuming that you and McDonald’s agree on the definition of “hot.”
What’s more, you assume you’ve always agreed, which is the baseline for assuming that the lady who sued had unrealistic expectations.
Yeah. I don’t remember the corporate policy for McDonalds coffee temperature at the time, but i do remember that it was *near boiling.*

Also, please remember exactly how much BS someone would have to go through to get that verdict. Generally speaking, someone has been seriously injured or killed. They have to prove that the company was negligent or knowingly refused to fix an issue. This isn’t like airing something on Fox News - there are actual standards of proof that have to be met. Even so, most consumer lawsuits against corporations do not achieve large awards. When they do, consider how severe the damage must have been. The MCD lady only wanted them to pay her damn medical bills (think about how much medical care costs in the U.S.); McDonalds refused. Toyota eventually had to pay a massive settlement (after being sued multiple times) for issues with the gas pedal causing sudden massive acceleration. Do you honestly believe they would have just fixed it on their own? Don’t let them fool you into thinking that people are getting hurt by a company’s product just because they’re stupid.
Corporations have no qualms about lying and defaming people they have hurt to avoid being held accountable.
Think about how much money McDonalds (and other corporations) have. Think of how easily they can pay for anything to go away. Think about the teams of high powered lawyers they can pay.
If a regular joe manages to take them to court and actually WIN? There’s a fucking reason for that.

This is actually really funny. In high school my humanities teacher told us a story about one of the Europe trips he had gone on with the school a few summers past. So him and the group of kids were in the middle of Rome and the tour guide had gotten lost. They could figure out how to get to some church they were going to see. All of a sudden one of the students like call attention to himself. He says he knows where to go and just start walking around the streets, taking back roads and side streets and within 20 mins they’re at the church they needed to get to. My teacher asks the kid if he has every been to Italy before. He says no, he just knew where to go because he played Assassins Creed Brotherhood.
I quite frequently have people over for drinks and later the pub on weekends, anywhere between 5-15 people, as my apartment is within walking distance from me and my friends favorite pub. We’re usually many of the same people, but sometimes people bring others which is cool, and one Friday night last year, a friend of mine did. He had recently started at a university, and the guy he brought (who we’ll call Asshat McThief) along was a friend of his. Seemed like a chill dude.
Except he wasn’t. He was loud and obnoxious the whole night. I never decide what the night is gonna be like when I have people over for it. Sometimes it gets loud, people get drunk and we have a proper party, but sometimes it’s just chilling with some music and beers and hit the pubs. It was one of those kind of nights, but he was not on the same level as everyone else. He was putting on shitty rap and singing along very loudly.
